"that Confederate veterans should have gotten pensions from the govt they tried and failed to destroy."
That was not their purpose for defending their homes. The pensions that were eventually given to them, even though most were dead by that time, came from THEIR government and country. A government that had given them legal status as an U.S. Veteran. A government and country THEY supported. A government that they protected by sending their sons and grandsons to die in Europe and the Pacific in two World Wars. It was the right thing to do.
