To clarify your thought about considering him one of the greatest of all time, you need to read some on his actions during Lee's first campaign, The Seven Days Battles. If you just framed him soley on his actions during the Seven Days, it would be hard to justify him as one of the greatest. I state categorically, that in my opinion he was one of the greatest. But one should know human shortcomings and not just great victories to judge. I certainly believe his fall was a severe blow to the CSA. A perfect example is his replacement, Ewell's failure to follow up the rout of the AoP, 1st Corps at Gettysburg and taking the high ground they were forced to attack the next day. Even Lee remarked about Jackson's abscence at this juncture. Neither Ewell or Hill quite rose to the independence that a Corps commander is allowed. After Gettysburg, study will show that Lee gave up his renown, plan making and allowing his generals to do the fighting. He became much more of a tactical commander. From the Wildnerness on, the famous "Lee to the Rear" episodes occurred at least 4 times.
