In Porter Alexander's writings he told of an instance during Jackson's flanking march at Chancelloresville. Alexander's men had been hauling a field piece in advance of Jackson's column and skirmishing with the enemy as they went. A federal brigade I believe was sent out to engage this lead element of Alexander's. The federal soldiers dropped their packs and raincoats before deploying. After being repulsed they fled the field. One of Alexander's men picked up one of the raincoats as a prize and on they marched. When Jackson met Alexander further ahead on the march he spotted the soldier with the raincoat. Upon inquiring where this man had gotten this coat he was met with blank stares. Jackson ordered the man be "put under close arrest for plundering a battlefield". Jackson was stictley by the book and his punishment for insubordination was swift and harsh. i.e. Maxxy Gregg and A.P. Hill.
