That means he was a very differnt person, not that he acted completely alone.
He did not act alone, especially in his greatest moments. There is no historical reference that he could have "alone" stemmed the tide of the direction of the war. He was an important piece of a very effective team, a corps commander in the Army of Northern Virginia, one of about thirteen seperate Confederate armies formed.
Peyton Manning is a great quarter back, but could he perform exactly the same without Marvin Harris? The answer is most probably no.
