Another Great Post!!!
In my opinion the Confederate States of America was a legal government of a country and people who had legally separated themselves from the former Union of United States.
As such, the entry into that country (the Confederate States) by the armed forces of another (the United States) was an invasion of a that Confederacy. It is absolutely amazing that in only 4 short years, while at war with a mighty military power like the United States, That the Confederate States were able to organize such a government and accomplish all the function of an Army and a Navy and local services that it did.
The 13 Colonies did get that well organized in their Government until well after the Revolution was over and a Constitution was written. Their first attempt at a Government (the Articles of Confederation) was a failure and had to be reorganized by writing the Constitution of the United States.
As for needing the recognition of either England or France? The Present day historians seem to forget the little fact that neither of those countries sent troops to the United States to help put down the southern rebellion. So does that mean that England and France did not recognize the United states as a legitimate Government? No. it doesn't. So, why should that standard apply only to the Confederacy?
The fact is that nations like England and France remained neutral. That is they gave equal diplomatic status to both sides. Exchanging diplomatic agents and doing business with both side.
