I learned a lot from the discussion that transpired from what would seem to be a simple question.
While I am biased for the Confederate States in my personal opinion, I am trying to understand the legal position of the Confederacy under the Constitutional Government of the United States in 1860.
While I have been on this board, and other, for years, You and others have contributed to my education greatly. I have always felt that Slavery by itself was not a Sufficient enough issue to have caused such a war as this nation endured. Morality issues are never good enough, by themselves, to sustain the necessary emotional levels that are needed to prosecute a war of such magnitude.
Such a war has to be fought over deeply held principals, such as freedom, self determination, the preservation of a way of life, or perceived rights granted in legality. While we would like to think we will fight to free oppressed people, historically we will rarely do that with such intensity and quickly become bored of such wars.
