You seriously should read "Mississippi in Africa" by Alan Huffman. There is much we do not know today about how they actually felt, this book will give you an idea. In the African country of Liberia, where ex-slaves created a new antebellum South in its own image, with districts named after Southern states and where white Southern leaders given honor to, most of us would be surprised. Many of those people look to the old American South as their homeland, not Africa.
