Frank, the idea of Haiti was on many antebellum southern minds. You have a nation of Negroes and mulattoes who defeat an army sent over by Napoleon Bonaparte. Scary example with your own slaves. Truth to tell, Haiti has always been a mess..under French rule....and more so under Haitians....still is today....what little I know about it, I learn from my grandfather, like my dad, he was also in the Marine Corps. In fact circa WW1 he was fighting in Haiti, not as tough as the German Army but able to kill you just the same. The stories he told me of that place are like from another world. A very strange place amigo.
