That's very interesting, Chief. When my great uncle Francis Boring was wounded at Spottsylvania in May 1864, he was hit in the left shoulder. I assume he was right handed, as this would be consistant with a right handed rifleman shooting off hand (i.e.standing). The ball then broke his shoulder blade, ranged down and to the right, exiting near his spine. In July he was captured in Roswell, Georgia, while at home recuperating from his very serious wound. At Camp Douglas until the end of the war, he contracted rheumatism. This apparently exacerbated his condition, as he was confined to his room the last twelve years of his life.
