Do you believe, as I am beginning to believe, that the war in the West was prolonged unnessarily, for some reason, maybe to take advantage of the spoils of cotton, bounties and plunder? It seems to me, that Mississippi and Alabama could have fallin much earlier, as much as by a year and half, had the Union Armies forced the issue.
