Re: Unionism in Remote Areas of the South

"Newt was afraid his children would never be able to find a suitable white mate and wanted to wipe out the mixed blood of Rachel's children, so in December of 1884 he forced his daughter Molly to marry Rachel's son Jefferson and his son George to marry Rachel's daughter Faney in a double wedding ceremony in Jones County, Mississippi."

Chief, I had not heard this part of the story. Ol' Newt must have been some piece of work to have done something like forcing his children to marry anyone. I wonder if there was a reception after the ceremony. BTW, my wife's name is Georgianne. She's named after her mother, who was named after the University of Georgia (Georgia Mae Spiers), where her dad, Georgianne's grandfather, Dr. Percy M. Spiers, taught and worked in the veterinary school, caring for their large animals. He was one of the finest men I have ever known. Stan
