Indeed, these men consider the citizenry to be more trusted than the military or the Government. That is the reason why without any restrictions the citizenry of the early states demanded the right to own the same weaponry as the Military even to owning Cannons, the most powerful weapons of their day.
Even today it is not "Illegal" to own military weapons to include Machineguns, Tanks or Artillery in many parts of this country. They are mearly restricted by a form of registration and tax. The National Firearms Act which placed even these restrictions on certain firearms was not enacted until 1934. I would agree that there is some argument that destructive weapons, such as modern day artillery ammunitions should have some form of restriction on their possession and useage, But as for conventional weapons that a common infantryman of today would have access to, should not be banned from the public ownership.
A sad fact of life is that during the 20th Century from January 1, 1900 to December 31st, 1999 governments throughtout the world which restricted the private ownership of firearms killed on average 1,500 of their own citizens A DAY. That is 365 days times 100 years times 1,500 people, for a total of 54,750,000 people according to the NRA. And I didn't count leap Years. Governments are the biggest killer of their own citizens throughout all of history.
