He has also gotten a reputation for being some sort of pacifist- a modern description I'm sure. According to my sources in 1811 he recommended to Congress to take East Florida by force before Great Britain did after the U.S. annexed the Republic of West Florida (not part of the Louisiana purchase) after local Americans had seized control of the fort at Baton Rouge from Spain. Those Americans raised the Lone Star flag for the first time over that fort. He did not believe in a permanent standing army but he was not opposed to war.
