Re: A glimmer of hope for some MIA's in WBTS

Dennis, that is good information. Don't kinow that we will find definitive information as to specific men in specific locations around Natchez, but Vicksburg and Marietta look promising. FYI there is a very good site for Soldiers Rest at Vicksburg, but still many unknowns.

The Friends of the Marietta Confederate Cemetery are pushing to get as many names as possible before Summer events start. There are lists and a memorial wall at Marietta, but many of the "now unknown" were in marked graves when they were reinterred at Marietta in 1866-67. However wooden markers are gone and only partial lists are available. There are ove 3000 men buried there. The group is working through newly discovered Hospital records for the time from Sept. 1863 to June 1864. Any list of names would be beneficial. In some cases all we have is initials or state or unit number.

If there is any way we could seek research assistance in DC to get the Marietta information, I would be willing to pay for the help. Since you may be the "only person on earth" that knows where to look, I'd hate to lose a chance to take a peek.

FYI I have cousin from the 123rd NY buried at the Marietta National Cemetery. His original burial was recorded well at New Hope Church; and he was moved by the U.S. Army (Good record keeping-there is even a map with names and grave numbers from the original battlefield burials).

If there were four federal soldiers found on the battlefields and reinterred at Marietta, that would be major news.
