Re: A glimmer of hope for some MIA's in WBTS

Ron, I've never charged anyone for research and don't plan on doing it. I'll be happy to spend a few hours when and if I'm in the area sometime in the near future. I have a feeling that the Marietta Cemetery is going to have a lot of information in it. The Natchez Cemetery alone would be about 800 to 1200 photographs taking one photo per information. That would take about two days alone. The Marietta Cemetery I would guess to be 10X that number. I would recommend that someway somehow you get all of the information from the National Archives before putting soldiers names in stone. Otherwise someone may be chasing their tails in a circle for a long time. I commend you and the organization for what they are doing and it is very worthwhile. I disagree with anyone for putting a deadline on something as enormous and important as this project is. My feeling is that when the research is finished and confirmed then at that point the deadline has occurred.

My original thoughts when I saw the Union soldiers heading for Marietta was -why not move them to Corinth- It sure is a lot closer from Natchez. Perhaps Corinth was not in operation at the time? Vicksburg was even closer and they were in operation. I don't know why they were selected for Marietta?

I can only speak for Camp Chase as some of those soldiers who were reinterred who died of contagious diseases were not moved for decades after the war for fear of workers getting the disease. What I'm getting at is I would be surprised to learn of soldiers buried at Marietta dying of contagious diseases. But then again I've been surprised before. I'll let you know as soon as I know when I'll be at the archives again. If any of our posters is planning on being at the archives in the near future please let me know and I'll see if we can't get the information to Ron concerning those four Union soldiers slated for Marietta. Thx Dennis
