Re: A glimmer of hope for some MIA's in WBTS

Ron You posted: FYI I have cousin from the 123rd NY buried at the Marietta National Cemetery. His original burial was recorded well at New Hope Church; and he was moved by the U.S. Army (Good record keeping-there is even a map with names and grave numbers from the original battlefield burials).
Is this map available on line or where might it be? I am going to New Hope next Wednesday and planned on spending time in the cemetery. In my last visit I did find one Federal soldier buried there, with a Union head stone. His name was Andrew Reynolds, Co. K, 89th Illinois Infantry. According to his records, he was killed on 27 May, 1864 at Pickett's Mill. One question I have is why was he moved to New Hope to be buried on what was part of the battlefield there? I do not remember if his date of death is marked on his headstone or not, but I will look when I go back. I am thinking he was probably killed there and buried where he fell by the Confederate Army, or he was wounded at Pickett's Mill and moved back to New Hope where he died, and was buried on the battlefield with others. And again why was he not moved to Marietta National, like so many Federal men were?
Also there are a lot of large stones placed in parts of the cemetery. These are just big rocks, that have no inscription on them at all. I am thinking these were probably graves of men from either side and they were buried where they fell, probably at the time there was some sort of identification put at the graves of the known, but over time they faded or rotted which left the remains buried there "Unknown". There are 2 markers in the cemetery stating that a certain number of "Unknown Confederates" are buried here. One memorial tells there are numerous Confederates buried here "Known only to God" I have some good pictures of these stones and memorials if anyone is interested email me and I will send them to you.
But if there is a detailed map showing grave sites it would help any of us that do a lot of cemetery research better understand the layout of cemeteries such as New Hope. tom w
