William W. Weir, Lt.Col. 37th Miss was in command of the expedition from Mobile against Grierson"s raid on the Mobile & Ohio in Dec. 1864. He had been wounded at Peachtree Creek and never rejoined his regiment. He sent "O'Neal's" regiment, Metts' battalion and King's battery ahead on one train and followed on another train with his command. The battle at Egypt, December 28 was fought by the troops of the first train and Gholson's Mississippi cavalry Brigade. Weir and the second train arrived in time to check Grierson's further progress south on the railroad. He signed his report of the affair as Lt.Col, 1st Confederate Veterans. I wonder if all these units maybe were Galvanized Yankees, except, of course, Gholson's command.
