Re: Joel McKee
Thanks, Patty. This is a help. I don't know why I didn't look in your volumes to start with Does your code indicate that he DID show up in the 1880 census?
I know little about him. He was in CO in 1861, described as a "frontiersman" or " old Indian fighter," probably mining gold, who was a leader of the pro-South forces around Denver according to the (Yankee dominated)newspapers. They had a secret camp at the ghost town of Russellville in 1861. A recent archeological survey found some military artifacts there. They are supposed to send me a copy soon. He led a group of about 45 men toward TX in Oct. 1861. They were captured near Ft Wise, held in Denver, charged with treason. They busted out 28 Feb 1862 and made their way South. Then McKee drops off my radar. I have no more authentic info on him after that. The CO papers attribute EVERY CSA activity involving CO to him but without foundation, as far as I can tell. That's what I am looking for. He was supposedly in the IT in May/June 1864. I'll send you anything I find. My sources are the OR's, and CO newspapers. Earl Pittman
