The photo of Kit Carson, General James Carlton, and about eight or so other New Mexico and California Cavalry men that I got from the Plalce of the Governors in Santa Fe and published in my article in the Rampant Colt (Colt collector's magazine) is listed as a Masonic photo and dated 1866, just a year or so before Carson died. Considering the rather adventurious, and solitary, life Carson lived on the frontier, I've always thought it curious that he seemed to put great stock in this fraternity. Perhaps it was the ceremony, which was not that unlike some of the traditional rites of the Indians he had lived with.
