Putting the puzzle together was a from a long night of googling. First the work "America's Civil War." This is a periodical published over serveral years by Empire Press, Leesburg Va. Google does not give the author only the year and volume 1991, vol. 4-5. This morning I tried to get the full snippet I had the other evening that was quoted to you. I get it now in parts as the snippet varies. Two entries into google books come close to the larger snippet of the other night. I entered: Confederate Maces Hole Hefner. My second entry of :Confederate McKee Robert Reed Hefner, makes the connection but is still short of what came up the other evening.
I am pursuing the full article.
The second reference is googling : J L Heffner Robert Reed Aurauria
The site offered is Western History and Genealogy Denver Public Library Fifty-niners Directory Colorado Argonauts 1858-59
Then scroll down through the H's to Hiffer, J. L. There is the full reference of Hefner (Hiffer) relation to Robert Reed and his role as treasurer of the gold fields.
I am wondering if all the variations of Heffner, Heffiner, Hiffner and hiffer are intentional.
