The Beulah Valley Historical Society is trying to discover what exactly happened at Mace's Hole(Beulah) during the time it was a central point of operations in the Confederate underground in 1861-62. Daniel Ellis Connors book gives a chapter to Maces Hole but the refrences are less than detailed. He mentions that operations at maces Hole were under the direction of a Colonel John Heffner. There is no reference ANYWHERE of such a colonel. I am wondering if Connor who was very, very cautious of naming names and himself changed his name to Dan Ellis as he moved on to Precott, Arizona, might have given an alias to Joel McKee. If McKee was so instumental in recruitment and Mace's Hole central to that function, i am wondering what role McKee had at Mace's Hole. Do you have any insights?
Thank you,
