destitute children auctioned off in Lamar County
In Response To: Re: Grayson County 17 Feb 1864 ()

Jerry Gleason,
.
This is THE saddest, most unforgettable posting that deserves to be reiterated. ..And we shall help you since the records must by sparse.
.
What was Mary Jane Gleason Belden Wyatt's maiden name?
We can help by finding the husband named "Wyatt."

"... My great grandfather (John Riley Gleason) was one of those unfortunate orphans along with 3 other siblings. ..Evidently, after their father (Rufus Gleason) died in the General Hospital in Marksville [Avoyelles Parish], LA in 1863, their mother remarried a man named Belden 2 months later, then sometime between 1864 and 1869 she married again and went by the last name Wyatt. ..She died in 1869, leaving the 4 destitute children who were auctioned off to the lowest bidder in Lamar County. ..."

Patti,
The Belden name came into play in my ancestry in Grayson County when a man named Jobez. D. Belden married Mary Jane Gleason, a widow, 2 months after Rufus Gleason died in a Civil War Hospital, Marksville, Avoyelles Parish in Louisana. ..Mary Jane had 3 children with the last name Gleason, Sarah, Lewis, and John Riley before marrying Jobez D. Belden. ..John Riley was my great grandfather. ..Mary had one more child named Minnie Belden with the Belden spouse.

The interesting thing about the marriage to the Belden guy, both the Gleason and Belden Families moved from the same county in Ohio in the 1850s. ..They lived in Iowa and Missouri before arriving in Texas. ..So apparently, the Gleason and Belden families knew each other for several years prior to the marriage of Mary Jane and Jobez [Belden]. ...

Thanks,
Jerry Gleason
