The Virginia in the Civil War Message Board

Jonathan,

Thank you very much for the detailed info on Ashby Turner, and the 7th Va.
Regiment... I have a few male ancestors named (Ashby) most likely after
him, no doubt...

Every since I started researching my ancestors from Virginia and West Va.,
Ohio and Pennsylvania; I have discovered that a lot of my ancestors fought
in almost every war: From the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War,
W.W. I & W.W. II, and so on... And it makes (ME) very proud, to say the
least; that my ancestors "stood up for a cause," no matter what side they
were fighting for; and gave "Me" my FREEDOM, today. And, I'm a girl... I
know most guys get into all the Military Research, more than us gals do.

But I love Movies that show the Rev-War & Civil War. Because I try to put
myself (in that time of great dilemma and dismay). And try to picture in
my mind - what our ancestors all had to deal with, during those controversy
times. Look at me... I had ancestors on both sides of the Civil War; some
were Confederates, while other's where Union "Yankees". But, if trees could
talk - what they could reveal to us all, about our great American History!!!

I live out in the country, so mornings are often filled with thick fog. I
often look out across the field "that holds some horses in a nearby pasture"
and just try to image: Rev-War "or" Civil War Soldiers on foot, trying to
make their way - through the thick fog; and often wonder: "What were our
ancestors really thinking, as they awaited their fate, day and night" as
they could barely see through the thick foggy sky - and what awaited them
on the other side of that great mighty fog, was unknown to them all... I
mean, it's bad enough to have to hear all those horrific sounds of canons
going off, and shots being fired. But to not be able to see right in front
of you, had to be the worse feeling of all... "God Bless them all."

Now, when I see old forts or go to cemeteries. I often picture in my mind,
all the soldiers there, "who had lost their lives" and try to "thank them"
for their great sacrifice and service, to us all...

Years ago, "as a cashier." I was ringing up this gentlemans American Flag,
during "Memorial Day." And I could tell he had served in the Vietnam War.
I then told him, "Thank You Sir," for fighting for my Freedom! He couldn't
believe his ears, and began to get all teary eyed. He said, "Thank you for
saying that to me." I continued telling him, that my Mom's first husband
fought in the U.S. Army, and her second husband fought for the U.S. Navy,
during the Vietnam War. And I've heard stories of how terrible the soldiers
were treated "when they returned back home" getting spit on, and yelled at,
etc. And he was so delighted to hear that someone at my young of age, had
wanted to pay him "honor" for his sacrifice and service.

I want to write a good "Civil War" Novel, one of these days. And I'm hoping
I can actually use parts of Winchester, Virginia, to write about. Since,
that is where my Mom was from, and most of her family still live there today.

I wonder, though. Can I legally use names of locations or mention battles
regarding Winchester, Va., in my stories? Or do I have to get Winchester's
permission, first?

Well, "Thanks alot" for all your help and suggestions. I do enjoy learning
about all my ancestors; and can't wait until I get to meet them in Heaven;
so we will have lots to talk about... My one Aunt, (who's 65) says I'm
crazy for wanting to learn about a bunch of old dead people. I told her, if
it wasn't for our ancestors - we wouldn't all be here! And, then I added:
Besides, I'm glad I'm taking the time to research my ancestors. That way,
when I do meet them in Heaven - we'll have lots to talk about, and I won't
wonder who all those people are "waiting to greet me, when it's my time to
go to the here and after." My Mom and I used to belong to our local Gene-
alogy Club, (for 4 years); and we would help volunteer our time, walking
the cemeteries "compiling" the gravestones; for our club to make up a book
for other researchers. I often would feel something for each person I wrote
down, as if they were my own loved one. I tried to give each person respect
(because I would hope that someone else, would do the same for my ancestors
buried in Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland, etc...

I could write and write, all day... I know my "calling" is to become a
writer!!! :) Even if I am a "Yankee" (Buckeye) at birth... "Hee-Hee."

Take care, and have a great week.

God Bless,
Rebecca Wilson <><
