8th (Wade’s) Confederate Regiment, Cavalry
“The Skeleton Cavalry”
Known as the 2nd Mississippi and Alabama until April, 1862.
Also known as Baskerville’s 4th Mississippi Cavalry Battalion, 2nd Battalion Mississippi Cavalry, Pope Walker Battalion Mississippi Cavalry, and the Alabama and Mississippi Battalion Confederate Cavalry

The 2nd Mississippi and Alabama Regiment was mustered into service in May, 1862 by the consolidation of Brewer’s 2nd Miss. Cav. Battalion, Faulkner's Battalion (Co. B of 8th Conf.), Baskerville's Battalions, Company K of the 2nd Mississippi Infantry Battalion, and Ball’s Battalion. It was composed of six Alabama and four Mississippi companies. They were under the command of General Joseph “Fighting Joe” Wheeler after September 1862 as a part of Wheeler’s Brigade. Colonel William B. Wade of Columbus, Miss. was the regimental commander. This regiment became the 8th Confederate Cavalry Regiment.

2nd Mississippi and Alabama/8th (Wade's) Conf. Cavalry Regiment:

Co. H (Randolph County, Ala.) John Thompson, Captain.
Co. I (Tallapoosa County, Ala.) John T. Wright, Captain.

Engagements: Shiloh, Blackland, Murfreesboro, Shelbyville, Chickamauga, protracted engagement near Dalton on May 1864, Dalton/Atlanta campaign, Jonesboro, Stoneman, Wheeler’s raid into Tennessee, Saltville, Montgomery during Wilson’s Alabama Raid, and the pursuit of Sherman into the Carolinas [split of regiment in 1864 explains what appears to be a conflict in the last two of this list...all companies except F, G, and H are found on the list of parolees in N.C.]
