Brewer's Battalion was also referred to as the "1st Battalion of Alabama Mounted Men". This was before they joined with the Mississippi companies. Co. H, drew recruits from northeast Tallapoosa County (specifically the Daviston area - the company was formed there January 30, 1862) as well as southeastern Randolph County. Co. I appears to have been recruited in west central Tallapoosa County around Youngsville (present day Alexander City). My great great grandfather John E. Abbott of New Site, Tallapoosa County was a member of Co. H. There is a wartime image of him on my website. He was captured during "Wheeler's Raid" into Tennessee in 1864. By sheer luck, I found circumstances of his capture (he was mentioned by name) recounted in a seldom seen pamplet entitled "A War Story or My Experience In A Yankee Prison" by Ben W. Darsey, 5th Georgia Cavalry. I have listed a Pvt. Jeremiah Coffman, (Discharged June 15, 1862) and Pvt. William Coffman (transferred to an unknown unit in the A.N.V.). Both were members of Co. H.
