Another point of interest. In the body of his letter to Beauregard's AAG written at Camp Bragg on April 22, 1862 Thompson identifies the companies of the "1st Battalion of Alabama Mounted Men" as follows:
Company A - Captain John Thompson
Company B - Captain John T. Wright
Company C - Captain Francis Pinckard

- Co. A, from Tallapoosa and Randolph, subsequently became Co. H, 2nd Miss & Ala Cavalry and finally Co. H, 8th Confederate. A comment on a muster roll for this company reads: "The Company marched from Daviston, Ala 30th of Jan 1862 and Mustered into the Confederate Service 5th Feb 1862 by M. N. Copeland". Daviston is in northeastern Tallapoosa County. Capt Thompson was captured at Rover, Tennessee on Jan 31, 1863. He was exchanged and resigned in May 1863. He was 53 years old.

- Co. B, from Tallapoosa, subsequently became Co. I, 2nd Miss & Ala Cavalry and finally Co. I, 8th Confederate. John T. Wright, Captain. Captain Wright was eventually promoted to Lt. Col. of the 8th Confederate. Most of this company was from Youngsville (present day Alexander City) in western Tallapoosa County.

- Co. C, from Chambers, subsequently became Co. K, 8th Confederate. Captain Francis Pinckard. I dont know much about it.

As Alan or Hayes mentioned in an earlier post, Capt Miles M. Slaughter's company was originally in this battalion but transferred to the 5th Battalion of Hilliard's Legion as Company E on March 13, 1862. It subsequently became Co. E, 10th Confederate Cavalry. Capt. Slaughter was a member of a well known Tallapoosa County family and he was born and raised a few miles southeast of Dadeville.

All four of the companies mentioned had originally enlisted as 12 month volunteers.
