Interesting question. Cavalry units often had men designated as "farriers" in the unit. These were men who, I assume, did nothing but shoe horses. But, there are also some men who are designated as "blacksmiths," and these men could also have shoed horses. Was there a real distinction between the two? Or was this just a semantic quirk between possible designations?
