Dear Dr. Ken,

Here are the names I know are from the St. Clair Co., Ala. area that were members of the 1st Ala. Cav. (U.S.), in Company G, I am sure there were others :

James M. Adams* - entered Pvt. - out Corp.
John H. Byers* - entered Pvt. - out Pvt.
Joseph P. Byers* - entered Pvt. - out Sgt.
Robert J. Byers* - entered Pvt. - out Sgt.
Samuel P. Byers* - entered Pvt. - out Sgt.
Bird Davis - entered "Undercook" - out "Undercook"
George Henderson - entered "Saddler" - out "Saddler"
Hansel Moore - entered "Farrier - out "Farrier"
Jessie Poe - entered Pvt. - out Pvt.
Wiley Poe* - entered Pvt. - out Pvt.
James Rhymer - entered "Blacksmith" - out "Blacksmith"
Shawn Owen - entered "Undercook" - out "Undercook"

The folks with an asterisk after their name were former members of company "C" of the 18th Ala.Confederate Infantry. Whether they were "Galvanized Yankees" or true deserters I have been unable to ascertain. I do know that a large part of Co. C. of the 18th was captured by Michigan Cavalry after Missionary Ridge.
