Alan:

Great explaination of the process of volunteers getting into Confederate service. I have been wondering what caused one group of men from an area to enlist in one company, and another group in another company, and these companies would become part of different regiments, and next door neighbors would be fighting in different theaters of war. I had envisioned, erroneously it seems, that everybody traveled to the point of enlistment, signed the line, and were issued their uniforms.

Obviously, this was not what happened most of the time. A number were established local militia companies, while others were evidently organized after the beginning of hostilities. As you can see from the map, all roads in western and northern Greene County literally lead to Clinton. This location was the enlistment point for several companies, includint Co C, 11th Alabama Inf, and Co B, 36th Alabama Inf. I am sure as I get further into this this list will include other organizations as well. The Pleasant Ridge crossroads was a little over a mile south of the line, so Greene County residents went north and Pickens residents, part of the community nonetheless, went into Greene companies.

Wonder if Jordan Norwood was from somewhere else? Pickens County is a possiblity because the present northwest corner of Greene County, including the Mantua area, east of Sipsey River, was part of Pickens County until 1867. There were Greene County guys in predominately Pickens companies, and Pickens citizens in Greene County companies.

Of course, there were the "Raccoon Roughs" from north Georgia, Capt John Brown Gordon, whom Gov Joe Brown of that state would not accept into Georgia service, thinking that he had enough. So they took the train to Montgomery, and were formed with the 6th Alabama Infantry. That's how a Georgian came to command that regiment.
