Can't explain the appearance of Ripley's company in this regiment. I appreciate your contribution as my knowledge of individual companies prior to joining the 9th Alabama tends to be a bit thin.

There are two dates for Hobbs' Company "H", this company being accepted in Confederate service at Athens, Alabama, June 10, 1861, enrolling at Lynchburg, Virginia, June 18, 1861. There are three dates for O'Neal's Company "I". Organized May 25, 1861, at Florence, Alabama, members were accepted in Confederate service at Centre Star, Alabama, June 3, 1861, and enrolled at Lynchburg, Virginia, June 18, 1861.

If I understand, the regiment organized at Richmond Va., June 26, 1861.

Then there are the odd cases. Consider Wilton L. Young's "Sam Cooper Rifles" of Mobile. Organized at Mobile, Alabama, August 19, 1861, this company entered state service on August 25, 1861. Members mustered at Richmond, Virginia, September 12, 1861, and held elections September 28, 1861. Evidently they arrived late, as no Alabama commands then in Virginia need this company. Captain Young was dismissed by order of a court martial on October 24, 1861, and new officer elections were held the follwing day. Members were accepted in Confederate service and returned to Mobile to join Zach Deas' 22nd Alabama. That regiment had organized on October 6th but lacked a tenth company.
