Re: Reconstruction, Migration

A detailed account of Union and Confederate activities at Chehaw exists in David Evans' book, "Sherman's Horsemen". Highly recommended.

Ball's 8th Alabama would have been operating in Mobile County in mid-April 1865.

At least ten Alabama Confederate commands organized in Macon County:

14th Alabama Infantry, Camp Johnston near Auburn, Alabama, August 7, 1861.
18th Alabama Infantry, Camp Johnston near Auburn, Alabama, on September 4, 1861.
McClellan’s 6th Alabama Infantry Battalion, at Auburn, Alabama, on October 9, 1861.
34th Alabama Infantry began organizing at Camp Shorter near Loachapoka, Alabama,
March 25, 1862.
37th Alabama Infantry, Camp Johnson near Auburn, Alabama, May 13, 1862.
39th Alabama Infantry, at Opelika, Alabama, May 15, 1862.
45th Alabama Infantry, Camp Beauregard near Auburn, Alabama, May 19, 1862.
46th Alabama Infantry, Camp Shorter at Loachapoka, Alabama, May 15, 1862.
47th Alabama Infantry, Camp Shorter, Loachapoka, Alabama, May 23, 1862.
48th Alabama Infantry, Auburn, Alabama, May 23, 1862.

This list was based on a quick review of my notes; perhaps other correspondents can name other commands.

We should also note the camp of instruction at Notasulga, Alabama, officially known as Camp of Instruction Number One, or Camp Watts. Major William G. Swanson was appointed to command of this camp on August 4, 1862. He reported five companies of conscripts had been organized by August 22, 1862. Within a month the number of companies had been doubled, each with a minimum strength of about thirty enlisted men from all parts of southern Alabama. Some of Swanson’s drill masters had served with him the 3rd Alabama Infantry Regiment, while others were acquaintances from Macon County, Alabama.

I'll try to list individual companies from Macon County later.

If anyone has particulars on the camps mentioned above, I'd like to have them.
