Oh yes. As to why Clanton and Armistead were still in the District of the Gulf, my guess would be that Taylor, Maury, and Forrest were more concerned (until 3/28) about the Federal buildup along the Gulf, and less concerned about Wilson. Correspondence indicates they assumed that Forrest could turn Wilson back pretty easily, then turn and strike Canby in rear. Also, it had been the original plan in 1864 for Canby to advance on Montgomery, then linkup with Sherman. The flip side of your question is: why didn't Buford move to Pollard with Hodgson's 7th/4th to assume command of all the cavalry before the Federal advance from Pensacola? The fight at Bluff Springs may have been a bit more interesting.
