Re: Reconstruction, Migration
In Response To: Re: Reconstruction, Migration ()

My confusion about Armistead's brigade is a result of the fact that its units had operated separately prior to the battle at Ft. Blakely. Spence's regiment was attached to Gen. Liddell's corps on the eastern shore of the Bay, where they picketed the approach of Gen. Canby's army. During the same time, Ball's regiment first opposed Steele's advance from Pensacola and then moved to oppose Spurling's advance along the railroad to and beyond Pollard. I suppose Lewis was with Armistead and Ball as well.

Also, Buford had been given command of all Alabama cavalry winter 1865. Roddey's division was on the way to join him when they turned to confront Wilson. Clanton's brigade did not join until after the debacle at Bluff Springs. I don't understand why Ball (and Lewis) did not join Buford at Greenville when Clanton's brigade did. Obviously, Spence would not have.

Thanks!
