Macon County Reserves
In Response To: Re: Reconstruction, Migration ()

Here are some notes from the ADAH Macon County files. These include rolls for each of the eight companies named, as well as a letter from the county commander which accompanied six rolls he had in hand at the time. I counted the officers and men on each roll and scanned ages for highs and lows. Only one company included any members above the ages 58/59, but all had exempts on roll between the ages of 18 and 45. All are written up on brown printed forms in standard (oversize) muster format.

Note that these men are NOT in Confederate service, but were mustered as First Class Militia, AKA County Reserves. Capt. Frazer’s roll includes name, age, beat, eye and hair color, height, complexion, where born and occupation, as well as remarks. The only individuals I noted on these rolls were captains, who are shown below:

Macon County Reserves, Col. J. S. Moore

Letter of Oct. 19 [1864], Creek Stand AL, to H. P. Watson, A & I G., State of Alabama:

Forwarding muster rolls of six companies which he received a day earlier, others to be sent as they arrive. Officers commissioned Sept. 20, 1864, to rank from Sept. 15, 1864.

Co. A, Capt. James F. Parks, 98 officers and men, Beat 1 (Tuskegee)
Co. B, Capt. W. A. Johnson, 60 officers and men, Beats 2-3
Co. C, Capt. G. B. Slaughter, 76 officers and men, Beat 6 or 9?
Co. D, Capt. Howell Peebles, 62 officers and men, Beat 4
Co. E, Capt. M. N. Eley, 81 officers and men, Beat 5
Co. F, Capt. S. B. Cloud, 81 officers and men, Beat 10-12
Co. G, Capt. Miles E. Vaughan, 87 officers and men, Beat 7? (Loachapoka)
Co. H. Capt. Alex Frazer, 75 officers and men, Beat 8 (Auburn)

Asks how the battalion should be designated or numbered, and if he is entitled to a medical board. The law isn’t clear on this subject. County commandant of militia claims to have this right exclusively.

“Something should be done speedily, for it is a great evil in our county (deserting & straggling) & shall issue the necessary orders as soon as I am authorized so to do.”

Capt. James F. Park, age 30, exempt as a teacher.
Capt. W. A. Johnson, age 53.
Capt. G. B. Slaughter, age 31, exempt as Justice of the Peace.
Capt. Howell Peebles, age 52.
Capt. M. N. Eley, age 52, exempt as a Minister.
Capt. S. B. Cloud, age 46, exempt as an agriculturalist.
Capt. Miles E. Vaughan, age 50.
Capt. Alex Frazer, age 49.

If anyone is familiar with beat organization/numbering in this county, I would be pleased to learn about it.
