He was mortally wounded May 15, 1864 at Resacca, Ga. during Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. He was obviously captured by the Federal Army of the Cumberland probably that same day and eventually admitted to the Resacca Field Hospital on May 20 where he died June 8.
His name, rank and unit affiliation was known by his captors and records kept by hospital staff to the extent that his medical history found it's way into "The Medical and Surgical History of the Civil War"
He was most likely buried somewhat near that facility, perhaps in the local cemetery. His grave would, I assume, would have been provided with some wooden marker which, over time, would have deteriorated, rotted, lost, etc.
It's quite possible that the local ladies association recorded those buried and compiled a listing. However, as we know, many of these old records were lost over time as well as army, hospital, etc. documents.
With the Federal army rapidly moving forward, I would not expect that the field hospital was but minimally staffed.
I suggest you contact the local Resacca Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp for assistance and advice in your search.
