Re: Trying to locate relatives
Howdy. Just trying to research my GGGGgrand fathers records in one of the first Calvarys of Vicksburg. William Joseph Groome and his three brothers, Robert, John-bugle boy, and James Joseph joined the volunteer Mississippi Calvary, which later became the infantry, after their father was killed on the banks of the Mississippi as the Northern ships entered Vicksburg. They re-organized in Memphis and were sent to the Northeast where they fought and survived numerous battles into Maryland. Miraculously, all four brothers came home alive.
William Groome returned home to Vicksburg and was appointed by President Cleveland as Postmaster of Vicksburg in (1872?). We have been unable to find the muster records, or disability records of the four of them. I would greatly appreciate any guidance or additional information on the details of their service.
I, also, know the four Groome brothers were later to become Vicksburg Police and Fire fighters. At various times, they were Chief of Police and, or Fire Chief of Vicksburg.
I, also, read that the four brothers were very angry when the Calvery was desolved, because they lost their horses that were brought with them.
