The Alabama in the Civil War Message Board

Re: The Alabama Cavalry Battalion of Fort Heiman,

It does not appear that he served at Shiloh having been discharged in September, 1861. However, there is a reference in an on-line history that he served as a Captain in the 3rd, but time frame not recorded.

Perhaps, Alan Pitts on this message board may be able to disclose further information.

Shiloh after battle report:
Report of Capt. T. F. Jenkins, First Alabama Cavalry Battalion.

CAMP CAVALRY BATTALION, CAVALRY BRIGADE, Near
Corinth, Miss., April 18, 1862.

GEN.: I herewith submit a report of the part taken by my
command in the action of the 6th and 7th instant:

On the first day of the action my company was attached as support to
a section of Capt. Ketchum's battery, on the left flank of Brig.-Gen. Ruggles'
division.

In the afternoon of the same day, when the battery was ordered forward,
my company, by order of Gen. Beauregard, dismounted to fight on
foot. I advanced with the Twenty-seventh Tennessee Regt., but did
not have the gratification of exchanging shots with the enemy before
their final retreat to the gunboats.

Nothing worthy of note occurred in the action of the 6th instant.

On the morning of the 7th I was ordered to the extreme left as flankers
and skirmishers, and was advancing in that position when Maj.-Gen.
Bragg ordered me to join Col. Brewer's battalion in the charge upon
one of the enemy's batteries on the left; but being ordered to retire
before reaching the battery, did not succeed in its capture. The remainder
of the day we remained in rear of Gen. Ruggles' division as support to
Capt. Ketchum's battery.

Second Lieut. McIntosh was attached as commander of Gen.
Ruggles' body guard on both days of the action. Nothing occurred
deserving particular note.

Number of men engaged on the 6th, 52; number of men engaged on the
7th, 47. No casualties.*

T. F. JENKINS,
Cmdg. Battalion of Cavalry.

Brig.-Gen. RUGGLES.

Third Alabama
Cavalry Regiment

This regiment was organaized at Tupelo, in June 1862, by companies that had been in the service some months, and several of which, as "Murphy's battalion,'' had fought at Shiloh. The regiment accompanied the army into Kentucky and was engaged in daily conflicts with the enemy, particularly at Bramlet's Station and Perryville. It fell back with the army, and was on constant and arduous duty during the remainder of the war, protecting its communications, guarding its rear and flanks, and often raiding upon the enemy's trains and outposts. It was part of the brigade composed of the First, Third, Fourth, Ninth, Twelfth, and Fifty-first Alabama cavalry, command first by Gen. Allen of Montgomery, subsequently by Gen. Hagan of Mobile. The Third was engaged at Murfreesboro, Shelbyville, Chicamauga, Kingston, Knoxville, Mossy Creek, Strawberry Plains, Losing continuously in casualties, and suffering severely during Longstreet's winter campaign. In the Dalton-Atlanta campaign it performed arduous service, fighting with severe loss at Decatur, and helping to capture Stoneman's column. In front of Sherman, the regiment shrouded Hood's movements, then harassed the former on his march, participating in the fights near Macon, at Winchester, Aiken, Fayetteville, Bentonville, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill. Reduced by its losses to a skeleton, the regiment surrendered in North Carolina.
