Boykin resigned his commission a short time after organizing the Mathews Rangers. Over two years later (July 23, 1864) he was assigned to Capt Leslie's Company, Senior Reserves, which later became Co "A", 4th Alabama Regiment, Senior Reserves. Boykin was detailed and left the company on Aug 15, 1864. No later record (see Private James Boykin, Co A, 4th Alabama Reserves).
The Confederate Citizens file includes several papers signed by James Boykin. Over time he did business with a variety of Confederate commissaries and quartermasters in Mobile and Selma, not just one.
