Re: Residents of Washington County AR, maybe ?

Patricia, I think I see where the confusion comes from. Apparently the book you cited identified Hawkins' company as a militia unit. In fact, Hawkins' outfit was an independent cavalry company (one source says it was named the "Texas Fencibles", another says it was named the "Titus County Invincibles"). At any rate, it was apparently not mustered into the Texas militia system, but instead went directly into Confederate service. It was first attached to the 2nd Arkansas Mounted Rifles, then was assigned to John Wilkins Whitfield's Texas Cavalry Battalion (sometimes called the 4th Texas Battalion), which was later increased to a regiment and designated as the 27th Texas Cavalry (sometimes called the 1st Texas Legion). Even if the company was originally a militia company (which I don't believe is the case), the men you mentioned enlisted after the company was already mustered into Confederate service (August 13, 1861), so the list cannot, in my opinion, be construed as some sort of militia call; especially since at least one of the men may have been an Arkansas resident. No way he would have been included in a Texas militia call, unless he had recently moved to Arkansas from Texas and was still carried on the voter rolls in Texas.

As to the men you asked about, as I posted earlier most of them were from Titus County. Also, as I recall, there were a few from nearby counties, including Red River and Lamar. Have you not checked the 1860 Titus County census yet? I bet you'll find most Hawkins' men listed there.

I'm afraid I can't help you with legal descriptions of the camps occupied by Hawkins' company. I've never seen any Civil War report, letter or diary which gave a legal description of a camp. When a location was mentioned, it was usually in relation to a nearby geographical site, such as a creek, town, river, etc.
