You've made some excellent points, Alan. In most of the civil wars throughout history, the winning side took great pains to obliterate the references and records (not to mention the people) of the losing side. Only in this unique country of ours did the winning side take extraordinary measures to preserve and disseminate the records of their adversary. I think about that all the time, and am amazed that so much was preserved.
