I bet Crawford was glad it turned out the way it did! Once he got his Cav regiment organized, he was able to command a brigade, although never promoted. I doubt that would have occurred if he had stayed as an infantry commander. Plus he was able to serve with his old commander, Fagan, whom he was very familiar with, although I sometimes doubt Fagan's abilities. He was either on or off. He led his bde well at Helena and almost took his objective. He did a fair job at Marks Mill, just a little coordination glitch could have saved some of his men probably, but then he bungled blocking Steele at Jenkins Ferry, and it seems like I have seen some poor remarks from other officers regarding the Missouri Raid. HOwever, I personally have never ran across anything negative on Crawford yet. SO I presume he was a solid commander. If any info exists supporting or denying that I would love to see it.
