Union Soldier

We are looking for a great uncle, Ira A. Wood who was from York, Wisconsin. It states in the Civil War roster at our historical society for Wisconsin Volunteers that he enlisted on Sept. 9, 1861 and that he died June 29, 1862, Batesville, Ark., disease. In family records it states that he died on the battlefield. Does anyone know what would have happened to Union soldiers bodies back then? Where would they have been buried and would the graves have been marked? We are not sure where to take our search from here. Can anyone steer us in the right direction? Was there a Union soldier prison camp anywhere around or in Batesville at that time? Any suggestions or information to solve the "disease or battlefield" puzzle would be very much appreciated.
