Re: Union Soldier
In Response To: Union Soldier ()

Nearly all of the dead soldiers were moved after the war ended. The names and such
were lost on many of the soldiers for various reasons.
The Union soldiers were usually placed in the National Cemetery with the Union soldiers
being placed inside and the Confederates (those were mine) on the outside.
Many, no matter the side, lay under a marker that says Unknown CSA or Unknown USA.
It is very possible he made it to Little Rock for reburial so check the cemetery listings
and see what you can find.
To my knowledge Batesville was not a prison camp. Disease probably killed as many
as bullets. I have read and been told that the soldiers from up North could not take the
heat down here as they were not used to such humid hot weather. Mosquitoes and
carried lots of diseases.
I feel sure there is someone who knows much more than I do, so I wish you the best
of luck in your search.
Linda
