The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

14th & 34th AR Infantry & 13th AR Cavalry

Hi, So I have questions on 3 Arkansas regiments:

First, I found some posts from this message board dated almost 10 years ago about a casualty list of men from the 34th Arkansas Infantry. This is one of the posts from that thread: http://history-sites.com/mb/cw/arcwmb/archive_index.cgi?noframes;read=5069 I kept looking, and was not able to find if that list was ever posted. If it was, can someone please direct me to it? I am looking for a man named "Adrian Hays". I have his service records showing he was a member of both the 7th Arkansas Militia, and the 34th Infantry, where many of the 7th Militia members joined. Apparently a family bible record of his brother, an officer in a Kentucky regiment, indicates he died in 1863. But his service record does not mention him dying, and no one else in the Hays family has any more information about it. He is not living with his wife and widow in the 1870 Census, so it seems possible that this year of death is correct, but I'm hoping to find a casualty list for the 34th Infantry to see if he is on it. If anyone can help me, I would be very appreciative.

Second, I found a service record for what I think to be a family member of mine, listed as "G.W. Hutchisson" of the 13th Arkansas Cavaly. The problem is, I can't find ANY information on the 13th Cavalry in order to prove that he is the G.W. Hutcheson I am searching for. I can only actually find service records for 8 men claiming to be members of the 13th Arkansas Cavalry, namely:

Gage, S. - 2nd Lt. - Company A
Hagler, Alexander - Priv. - Company A
Hutchisson, George W. - Priv. - Company A
Pevehouse, W.J. - 2nd Lt. - Company C
Price, W.C. - Priv. - Company F
Raiks, Joseph - Priv. - Company D
Wells, William - Priv. - Company A
Williams, Henry - Priv. - Company E

If anyone can provide any information on the 13th Cavalry, I'm hoping it can help me prove that the George W. Hutchisson is the man I'm looking for.

Third, I have a brother of the aforementioned G.W. Hutcheson who I am looking for information on. We have dozens of letters from a surgeon of the 14th Arkansas Infantry who was courting a woman named Mary Cummins Wolf, who was a 1st cousin of G.W. Hutcheson as well as his brother R.C. Hutcheson. In 2 of his letters, he mentions R.C., the first as being on his death bed, and a month later, making clear he had died. There is an "R.C. Hutchenson" buried in the Confederate Cemetery in Fayetteville, and we believe that is the man we are looking for. The problem is we can't find a service record for him anywhere. I have looked in 5 different databases, using as many spellings of Hutcheson, Hutchinson, Hutchenson, Hutchisson, Hutchisen, etc. as I can think of, and cannot find information for him. The letters seem to prove his service. A third brother, J.W. Hutcheson, has a service record as part of the 14th Infantry, as does his brother-in-law, Thomas D. Martin, and his great uncle, John Wolf. So he clearly has a close connection to the 14th, but he does not have a service record with them or with any regiment I can find. A 4th Hutcheson brother, Michael M. Hutcheson, was a 1st Lt. in the 27th Infantry, but I don't find mention of R.C. in any of their records either. Maybe he was a part of this elusive 13th Cavalry? I just don't know. I didn't find any service records of men who could fit the "R.C. Hutchenson" buried in the Confederate Cemetery in Fayetteville, so I feel confident that that is the man I am looking for, but I'd like to have solid proof.

For reference, these are the 2 letters from the surgeon John M. Casey that mention him:

In a letter dated 11 Nov 1861, from John M. Casey to Mary C. Wolf: "Richard Hutchison [Mary's 1st cousin] has Typhoid Pneumonia, and has been on the point of death."

In a letter dated 19 Dec 1861, from Casey to Wolf: "John Hutchinson has had low form of billious fever but I have the pleasure to inform you that he is getting well. This case has been directly under my supervision, and Jack for Nurse, and he has been difficult to treat, because John has been scared for fear he would go like Dick he has become reconciled."

If someone has any ideas about where I could try and find out what regiment Richard served in, I would be very grateful. I own Desmond Allen's 14th Arkansas Infantry book, but it does not mention him.

I am trying to collect this information for the book I am writing. I have been able to confirm that I had 79 biological uncles and grandfathers who served in the Civil War in some capacity, NOT including step-grandfathers, uncles by marriage, or any cousins, but Uncles only. I've spent months collecting their information and I'd like to put it into book form. The information on G.W. and R.C. Hutcheson are 2 of my biggest loose ends, as I can't confirm the George is "mine", and I can't confirm Richard's regiment. Only one other of the 79 men doesn't have a service record, but his widow received a Confederate Pension using him, so he must have served somehow.

Anyway, thanks for any help anyone can give.
