Thanks, Nathan. This board is populated by the finest experts on the Civil War in Arkansas anywhere. If someone has a question on even the most obscure event, place or person, one of them is sure to have an answer. There are exceptions, though; one of which speaks to the question you posed. Some of us refer to the "Black Hole" in Arkansas Civil War records. This period basically covers the end of Price's Missouri raid to the end of the war. With very few exceptions, there are no muster rolls for regiments serving in Arkansas in the Black Hole. That lack of records includes home guard and partisan ranger companies. The only information we have about this period comes from official correspondence, orders, prisoner-of-war records, surrender lists, the occasional letter or diary, postwar pension applications, and postwar histories, such as Goodspeed. It's possible to piece together an historical narrative for some units, based on secondary sources, but by no means all. I personally have no information on a company organized in Newton County after Price's raid. The last Newton County company I can find was organzied in June 1863. Perhaps someone on this board can help, or direct you to some source of information.

You're probably familiar with the writings of Silas Turnbo. His tales of the Ozarks contain a few references to the 14th Arkansas Regiment. Turnbo himself served in the 27th Arkansas, and published a regimental history. If I recall correctly, there was a reference or two to the 14th Arkansas in his memoir.
