Re: Thomas Cox,Capt. Quartermaster Corp, Camp Nels

George and Danny - thank you both so much for this information. It is just what I needed. I had looked only in Arkansas and Missouri records as you have probably guessed. I still have no idea why he was among the Texas boys.

There is no doubt that this is the right man since he was evidently serving Gen. Marsh Walker according to the letter that I am transcribing written from near Arkadelphia on Sept. 27, 1863. Laura Cox, who fled with the troops from Little Rock on Sept. 10 tells Emily Weaver, "I got a letter a few days ago from Tom [her husband , Thomas Cox ] – He was going to apply for leave of absence in about 10 days, when Gen. Walker returned & try to come to me. I am expecting him a little now. He wrote in case the Army here fell back from here for me to go with them & write to him." Gen. Walker is dead by the time she writes the letter, so Tom couldn't apply to him for leave.

If you will, please check my interpretation of the officers mentioned in the letter and maybe suggest a better designation of their ranks. I just put "General' for any rank of General - very hard for me to sort out. Seems like most of them came by to check on her as they were all fleeing Little Rock or else she saw them along the way. She was special friends with Marmaduke's staff since they had headquartered in hers and Tom's home in Batesville. There are around 2000 words in the letter.
