Re: Thomas Cox,Capt. Quartermaster Corp, Camp Nels

Question: What was Robert G. Shavers "Official" rank prior to September 24th, 1862?

Robert Shaver returned to Arkansas after being wounded at Shiloh and his 12 month enlistment expired as many other Arkansas Officers did during the Crisis of the summer of 1862. He was almost immediately placed in command of a camp of instruction, and the Post of Pine Bluff in June to August of 1862. Several Telegraphs of the Hindman Copy book in the Alexander Collection are directly addressed to him in command at those posts, during that period. He recieved and executed several military orders and corresponded with higher commands at Little Rock while in command of and organizing a brigade of Arkansas Infantry consisting of the 19th (Dawson's), 24th (Portlocks), 33rd (Grinsteads) and Crawfords battalion.

Did he not retain his rank as Colonel during that time? If so why is his date of rank September 24th, 1862?

I suspect that this information of a date of September 24th, relates only to his appointment to command and organization of the 38th Arkansas Infantry, since Colonel Shavers did not depart from Pine Bluff until September 28th, 1862 at which time he was still in command of that post. The 33rd Arkansas Infantry was dispatched from Pine Bluff on Oct 4th to join Col. Shavers at Litle Rock and accompany him to North Arkansas.
