My friend has recently returned from a tour of Afghanistan and has brought back 2 rifles, 1 is Marked as an Enfield 1858 with a crown and the letters VR over what appear to be crossed swords?? over the letters;

The barrel is marked;
VR
1P
CROWN
E

Does any one know of the history of this rifle.

The other rifle is a Tower 1870 with a crown and VR XP on the barrel.

I would be grateful for any information on these rifles.
