I have not yet read the book. However, I heard a talk on this subject that Prof. Bailey gave, and spent time talking about it with her. Her thesis is that while Sherman talked a lot about destruction (for example, "Make Georgia Howl"), contributing to his reputation as a burner, in actuality the March to the Sea was not as destructive as popular image has it. Anne Bailey's reputation for good scholarship is well established in the Civil War community.
