My family suffered directly from this war criminal's march! They not only senselessly destroyed courthouse records, churches, and even black people's property but there are documented cases of rape and murder! One rape was in Midland,a town that was near Milledgeville, Ga of a Confederate Captain's wife who spent the rest of her years in an insane assylum. There was, and I presume still is, a monument to Burrell Hemphill near Blackstock, S.C. He was a slave who would not tell where his owner's money was. There was no money. He was murdered by Sherman's troops. They also set fire to stock cars on a side track at Griswoldville, Ga that were full of animals. They burned to death. This is just a few of the senseless, extremely brutal acts performed by "Uncle Billy's" troops. Not stragglers, as appologists like to claim, but troops under orders. The list goes on and on. You don't have to go no further than to take Sherman's own words about the amount of destruction! My own family on both sides had houses burned and were left literally to starve to death.
